Beer, Food, and a whole lot of drool
We spent the weekend finding another winning combo: great craft beer and food worth driving for. From the smoothie-like sours and unique homebrew-meets-taproom vibe at Hopsology to the can’t-miss Hawaiian barbecue at Leo’s, this trip was packed with good pours, great eats, and the kind of laughs that make the whole experience even better.

A Beer… or a Dessert in Disguise?
If you’ve ever looked at a beer and thought, “That looks like a melted smoothie…should I be concerned?”—you’re exactly where you need to be.
We kicked things off with “Zombie Whip” from Beer Zombies out of Las Vegas, and this thing had absolutely no intention of behaving like a normal beer. Strawberry, banana, ice cream—it checked all the boxes of something you’d expect to get with a spoon instead of a pint glass. It poured thick, looked like a pink pencil eraser, and somehow still drank like one of the smoothest sours we’ve had in a while.
At 4.3%, it’s dangerously easy to forget you’re even drinking alcohol. At one point, we were mid-conversation and realized we were basically drooling over it. Not our proudest moment… but also not our worst. If you’re lactose intolerant, plan accordingly. If you’re not, you’re about to have a great time.
Hopsology – A Hidden Gem with a Story
This weekend took us to Hopsology, and this place surprised us in the best way possible.
From the outside, you don’t really know what you’re walking into. It’s a little dark, a little low-key, and then you open the door and realize it goes way deeper than expected. The layout stretches back with a cozy seating area up front, a uniquely shaped zig-zag bar in the middle, and a clean, modern setup that makes you feel like you found a spot most people don’t know about yet.
What makes it even better is the story behind it. It started as a homebrew shop years ago, and instead of disappearing, it evolved. Now, it blends a taproom experience with a fully functioning homebrew supply shop in the back. You can literally grab a great craft beer, then walk a few steps and buy everything you need to make your own. That’s the kind of concept we love—something that turns curiosity into a full-blown hobby.
When Beer Gets… Aggressive
One of the first pours we tried was the Orange Drumsticks Imperial Hazy, and “pour” might not be the right word. This beer fought its way into the glass.
It was thicker than orange juice, closer to a smoothie than anything else, and drinking it felt like committing to a challenge. The flavor was great—like an orange creamsicle—but halfway through, it turned into a bit of a battle. The kind where you start questioning your choices but refuse to quit because you’ve already come this far.
To their credit, the guys behind the bar gave us a heads-up and even offered a smaller pour knowing how it was coming out. That right there tells you a lot about the place. They care about the experience, not just pushing drinks across the counter.
Finding Balance (and a Fridge Full of Trouble)
After that experience, we needed something a little more… manageable. A hazy IPA from Wren House did the trick, and it actually sparked a realization—our taste in beer might be evolving. Either that or we’re just finally catching up to everyone else.
Then came the moment.
The fridge.
And not just any fridge—a Drekker selection that stopped us in our tracks. If you know smoothie sours, you already understand what happened next. If you don’t, just know there was zero hesitation. We grabbed a raspberry sour that was thick, rich, and everything we hoped it would be.
At that point, it felt like we had officially hit our stride for the day.
The Concept That Makes It Special
What really stood out about Hopsology wasn’t just the beer—it was the experience as a whole.
There’s something different about a place where you can sit down, enjoy a great pour, talk to people who clearly know their craft, and then walk into the back and see where it all begins. It bridges the gap between casual drinkers and people who want to dive deeper into the craft beer world.
It’s not just a stop—it’s a place you could spend time in, learn something, and come back to.
The Food That Sealed the Deal
After wrapping up at Hopsology, we made our way to one of our favorite spots, Leo's Island BBQ.
If you’ve had Hawaiian barbecue before, you probably think you know what to expect. But Leo’s just does it better. The chicken is ridiculously tender, the flavors hit every time, and somehow even the macaroni salad stands out. There was something a little different about it—maybe a hint of tuna—but whatever it was, we kept going back for more.
And then there’s the chicken sandwich. Somehow, this had been flying under the radar. Instead of the usual pickles, they use thick slices of cucumber, and that simple switch completely changes the experience. It adds a fresh crunch that just works. Perfectly.
Meanwhile, one of us was driving while the other was enjoying fresh, hot food. Let’s just say there was a little bit of jealousy involved… but also some strategic sharing at red lights. Relationships are about balance.
The Perfect Ending
After a day like that, there’s really only one way it ends.
You get home, sit down for a minute… and next thing you know, you’re waking up hours later wondering what happened.
Good beer, great food, and a full day of exploring will do that to you. And honestly, there’s nothing better.
Final Thoughts
This was one of those weekends that reminds us exactly why we started doing this. Trying new places, finding hidden gems, laughing through the unexpected moments, and sharing it all along the way.
If you’re anywhere near Glendale, Hopsology is absolutely worth the stop. And if you’re already there, Leo’s is the perfect follow-up.
Trust us—make the drive. We will. Again. Probably soon.
Until next time… cheers!!!
